Description:  This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual/gestural language used by Deaf people. You will learn sign vocabulary, grammar and Deaf culture. You will develop receptive and expressive skills.

American Sign Language 2 (AMSL 1100)

Credits:  4   Lecture Credits:  4.00  
Description:  This course is an extension of ASL 1. You will continue to learn ASL vocabulary, structure, syntax and grammar with a focus on mastering the basics of fingerspelling, numbers, colors, facial grammar and sentence structure. You will also continue to learn about Deaf culture, including Deaf humor.

AMSL 1000.

Deaf Culture (AMSL 1145)

Credits:  3   Lecture Credits:  3.00  
Description:  This course will introduce you to the culture of Deaf people in America and around the world. You will develop a greater understanding of the cultural differences, norms, habits and values of both Deaf and hearing cultures and how these affect the ways people relate to one another between cultures. You do not need to know American sign language to take this course.

American Sign Language 3 (AMSL 2000)

Credits:  4   Lecture Credits:  4.00  
Description:  This course continues building ASL skills learned in ASL 1 and 2. You will examine grammatical features of ASL such as descriptive and location classifier hand shapes. You will also learn advanced sentence structure and use of space and continue building vocabulary. You will have the opportunity to create and perform stories and role plays in ASL for feedback.

AMSL 1100.

American Sign Language 4 (AMSL 2100)

Credits:  4   Lecture Credits:  4.00  
Description:  This course continues to build on the ASL skills learned in ASL 1, 2 and 3. You will continue working toward fluency in ASL building on the concepts and vocabulary learned in ASL 1, 2 and 3 by incorporating the expression of abstract concepts, expressive finger spelling and advanced conversational behaviors. You will develop a deeper understanding of facial grammar and Deaf Culture.
MnTC: Goal 8 Prerequisites:

AMSL 2000 or instructor approval.
