Description:  This foundational course introduces you to career opportunities working with school age children (5-12) during out-of-school time. You will examine the roles of school-age providers, basic program elements and regulations, professionalism, and current issues. You will increase your understanding of national standards and the skills necessary to successfully work with school-age children in an out-of-school time program. Must be taken A-F.

Growth and Development for Educators (ECED 1215)

Description:  This course addresses typical and atypical child development from birth through age 12. You will examine all developmental domains, including physical, social, emotional, cognitive, language, and creative, as well as consider how development is viewed from differing theoretical perspectives within the context of gender, socioeconomics, and culture. Description:  This course will examine key components of regulations, standards, and policies that ensure physical and psychological health, safety, and nutrition for both children and staff in early-childhood settings. Description:  This course will examine the impact of child development, relationships, culture, and the environment on positive behavioral guidance in early-childhood settings. You will explore strategies for interacting with individual children, small or large groups, and developing caring social communities with a focus on developmental approaches that consider self-discipline as an emerging skill and acknowledges collaboration between school and home settings. Description:  This course examines how to work with many types of families. You will investigate the importance of family/school partnerships, study methods of effectively communicating with families, and identify community organizations and networks that support families. You will explore various classroom strategies emphasizing culturally and linguistically appropriate antibias approaches supporting all children in becoming competent members of a diverse society. Description:  This course focuses on the appropriate use of assessment and observation strategies to document development, growth, play and learning in conjuncture with families and professionals in promoting children's success. You will explore recording strategies, rating systems, multiple assessment tools and portfolios, with a focus on increasing objectivity in observing and interpreting children's behavior, observing developmental characteristics, and increasing the awareness of normal patterns of behavior. Practicum 1 (ECED 1600)

Description:  This course provides students an opportunity to demonstrate early-childhood-teaching competencies under guided supervision in licensed early-childhood programs to make connections between theory and practice and developing professional behaviors. You will design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for all young children by applying comprehensive understanding of children and families using developmentally appropriate, child-centered, play-oriented approaches to teaching and learning, and knowledge of curriculum content areas. Must be taken A-F.
Prerequisites:

ECED 1545 or instructor approval to take ECED 1545 concurrently. This course requires instructor permission to register.

Description:  This course examines the child with differing abilities in an early-childhood setting. You will integrate strategies that support diversity and anti-bias perspectives; provide inclusive programs for young children; apply legal and ethical requirements including, but not limited to ADA and IDEA; differentiate between typical and exceptional development; analyze the differing abilities of children with physical, cognitive, health/medical, communication, and/or emotional/behavioral disorders; work collaboratively with community and professional resources; utilize an individual education plan; adapt curriculum to meet the needs of children with developmental differences; and learn the importance of cultivating partnerships with families who have children with developmental differences. Practicum 2: Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum (ECED 2600)

Credits:  3   Internship/Practicum:  3.00

Description:  This course provides an opportunity for students to continue to demonstrate early-childhood teaching competencies under guided supervision in a licensed early-childhood setting, making connections between theory and practice. You will continue to practice professional behaviors as they apply to child-centered, culturally sensitive, play-oriented approaches to teaching and learning. You will demonstrate knowledge of curriculum content areas as they develop, implement, and assess curriculum that promote positive development and learning. This class includes 144 hours of fieldwork in an early childhood setting. Must be taken A-F.
