Intermediate Spanish Language and Culture 2 (SPAN 2100)
Spanish 2100 is a follow-up to Spanish 2000. You will practice writing, reading, speaking and listening skills in preparation for the examination. You will receive skill evaluations from the final examination sequence based upon the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards. You will develop greater comfort and fluency if you have previously studied most of Spanish grammar and can already communicate simple ideas and narrate simple information in past, present and future tenses. You will practice difficult structures such as the use of object pronouns, subjunctive mood, adverbial conjunctions, hypothetical and future structures. You will develop communicative skills by the expansion of vocabulary, as well as idiomatic expressions. You will learn to "talk around" unknown vocabulary, express opinions, support them and engage in discussion and argument. This course satisfies MnTC Global Perspective requirements through readings, lectures, writing exercises, discussions and other presentation media, giving you a useful cultural, historical, sociological and literary insight into the various peoples who speak Spanish throughout the world.
1. Presentation and discussion of cultural productions and materials encompassing literature, music, art, films and other media in the target language
2. Linguistic, literary, creative, and analytical based on exposure to and awareness of different cultures and different peoples who share a common language are presented
3. Analysis, creation and presentation of original written artistic/media works in the target language
4. Grammatical Topics: continued work with the formation and uses of the present subjunctive, continued work with the formation and uses of the preterite and imperfect, the future tense, stressed possessives, the past subjunctive, the conditional tense
5. Vocabulary topics: context-based approach of topics such as relationships and stages of life, political history, professions and the work world, government and civic responsibility, and traveling abroad
6. Culture: Students acquire cultural information for the purpose of understanding and appreciating the products, practices, and perspectives of other cultures. Topics include: terms of endearment, feminine forms of the names of professions, age of majority
1. Demonstrate proficiency in listening & reading of authentic materials and speech at the ACTFL Intermediate High level or better
2. Demonstrate skills in speaking and writing at the ACTFL Intermediate Mid Level or better. Linguistic skills include effective usage of commands, subjunctive and use of both preterite and imperfect past tenses, as well as multiple object pronouns. Students will demonstrate emerging skills with compound/perfect tenses, past subjunctive and a variety of idiomatic expressions. For computer-assisted assignments outside of class, students will demonstrate writing skills at the Intermediate High level or better
3. Appreciate and understand a wide range of works of literature, philosophy, and the arts – contemporary as well as traditional – within the target language
4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of these works within their cultural, artistic, historical, geographical, political, and social context, with emphasis on cultural behavior, ideas, and values. They will also analyze specific issues in a global context, focusing on alternative ways of considering problems and proposing solutions
5. Create original works in the target language which stimulate the creative process, using synthesis, and analysis in the interpretive process
