Description:

The certificate in American Indian Studies offers an academic award for students interested in a concentrated study of the historical and contemporary issues of Native American peoples and cultures. These courses can satisfy a number of lower-division courses for students interested in going on to a four-year major or minor program in American Indian Studies.


Program Learning Outcome #1:  Articulate an understanding of and appreciation for the diversity and validity of the history, literature, art, spirituality, practices and political struggles of various American Indian cultures, perspectives and experiences in the past and the present.

Program Learning Outcome #2:  Appreciate and/or use the Indigenous languages of America for basic conversation purposes.

Program Learning Outcome #3:  Demonstrate a more specific understanding of the history, culture and contemporary experiences of American Indian tribes in Minnesota; in particular, Dakota and Ojibwe.

Program Learning Outcome #4:  Develop and incorporate the skills and methodologies of American Indian Studies, such as critical thinking, field work, data collection, interviews and academic writing.

Program Learning Outcome #5:  Demonstrate knowledge of how Native and non-native historians and social scientists discover, describe and explain the behaviors and interactions among individuals, groups, institutions, events and ideas of the Indigenous Nations of the Americas.
