Description:

The Cinema program immerses you in the art, craft, business and discipline of filmmaking. You will explore nuances of Cinematography, Directing, Editing and Post-Production, Screenwriting and Sound.  This innovative program uses a combination of aesthetic, technical and theoretical approaches to advance your knowledge of storytelling and the narrative form.


Program Learning Outcome #1:  Discuss and articulate the history and development of the language of cinema.

Program Learning Outcome #2:  Understand all the roles and stages involved in filmmaking and collaborate on production teams.

Program Learning Outcome #3:  Comprehend visual writing for screenplays.

Program Learning Outcome #4:  Show proficiency in at least one disciplinary area of a filmmaking team; screenwriting, directing, editing or cinematography.

Program Learning Outcome #5:  Understand the basics of film as a visual language and telling stories through images.

Program Learning Outcome #6:  Demonstrate technical competence with current digital filmmaking tools.

General Education Courses (30 credits):

To earn the Cinema A.S. degree, students are required to successfully complete:

  • 30 credits of coursework in a minimum of six of the MnTC Goal Areas;
  • 18 credits of the required General Education courses, will satisfy three of the required six MnTC Goal Areas.
  • *12 credits of required MnTC coursework must be selected from at least three additional areas of the MnTC Goal Areas other than MnTC Goal Area 1, 6 or 8.

All students pursuing this award should work closely with their advisor to ensure proper selection of required program courses, if applicable program electives, required Minnesota Transfer Curriculum courses, and MnTC electives. You are expected to meet with your advisor on a regular basis to ensure courses are taken in an order that will lead to efficient and successful completion of the required coursework.
