Introduction to Spanish Linguistics (SPAN 2230)

Description: This course provides a fundamental introduction to Spanish Linguistics. In this introduction to upper-level Spanish Linguistics courses you will develop advanced communications skills. You will also develop basic skills in phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, pragmatics and sociolinguistics, including language acquisition and language and gender.

Topical Outline:

1. Phonology: phonemes and phonetics
2. Morphology: word formation and morphemes
3. Syntax: sentence structure, word order and grammar
4. Pragmatics: speech acts and politeness
5. Sociolinguistics:
     a. large group demographics - world & US
     b. culture identity & change
     c. language & gender
6. Language Acquisition


Learning Outcomes:
1. Research, memorize, recall, identify, repeat, transcribe and produce speech sounds in Spanish in relationship to the International Phonetic Alphabet and the research methods of the linguistics discipline, including phonemes and related phonetics (Communication)
2. Memorize, recall, identify, repeat and parse constructions in Spanish in relationship to grammar: sentence, subject, predicate, noun, noun phrase, adjective, adverb, preposition and prepositional phrase (Communication)
3. Examine, discuss and explain (and perhaps discover) history and demographics of the largest populations of Spanish speakers in the world and United States, including Minnesota and Minneapolis/St. Paul Metropolitan area and fundamentals of linguistic behavior in regards to sociocultural factors
4. Examine, discuss, analyze and explain (and perhaps discover) development and change of cultural identities in U.S. and other Spanish-speaking communities, including language and gender and language acquisition

 

Prerequisites:

SPAN 2215 or equivalent or Minnesota Seal of Biliteracy (in Spanish) or instructor approval.
