The Political Science Transfer Pathway AA offers students a powerful option: the opportunity to complete an Associate of Arts degree with course credits that directly transfer to designated Political Science bachelor’s degree programs at Minnesota State universities. The curriculum has been specifically designed so that students completing this pathway degree and transferring to one of the seven Minnesota State universities enter the university with junior-year status. All courses in the Transfer Pathway associate degree will directly transfer and apply to the designated bachelor’s degree programs in a related field.

*This transfer pathway in Associate of Arts in Political Science will transfer to the following majors:

  • Bemidji State University: Political Science, BA
  • Metropolitan State University: Social Science, BA
  • Minnesota State University, Mankato: Political Science, BS
  • Minnesota State University, Moorhead: Political Science, BA
  • Southwest Minnesota State University: Political Science, BA

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: FIRST SEMESTER: 

Political Science Transfer Pathway Associate of Arts Degree

As governed by Minneapolis College Policy 3.05 and 3.09, students seeking an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Minneapolis College must successfully complete a total of 60 college-level credits as outlined below.

MnTC Requirements: 40 Credits

Students must successfully complete a total of 40 credits of coursework in all MnTC goal areas as follows:

All students pursuing this degree should work closely with their advisor and consult with the intended transfer institution to ensure proper selection of required program courses, if applicable program electives, required Minnesota Transfer Curriculum courses, and MnTC electives.

Political Science Core Courses

Requirement

 One Introduction to US Politics course

 PSCI 1101: American Government and Politics

 

 Choose one of the following Political Science courses:

 Either World Politics or Comparative Politics

 Choose one of the following Political Science courses:

 PSCI 1104: World Politics

 Or

 PSCI 1105: Comparative Politics

 Choose one Political Science Elective from the list of approved electives.

 

 Choose one Political Science elective from the following approved list:

 PSCI 1104 or PSCI 1105 if not previously taken

 Or

 PSCI 1102: State and Local Government

 Or

 PSCI 1170: Community Organizing: History, Theory and Practice

 Or

 PSCI 1180: Politics, Media and Community Organizing: Indigenous Understandings and Applications

 Or

 PSCI 1190: Leadership/The Politics of Community Change: Soc Move/Non-profit/Comm Dev.

 Or

 PSCI 1200: Introduction to Public Policy

MnTC GOAL AREA

REQUIREMENT

 MnTC Goal Area 1: Written and Oral Communication

 A minimum of 9 credits, which must include ENGL 1110 or ENGA 1110, ENGL 1111, as well as an eligible communication Studies (CMST) course

 MnTC Goal Area 2: Critical Thinking

 Any course from MnTC Goal Area 2 or Completion of all other MnTC Goal Areas and 40 MnTC credits.

 MnTC Goal Area 3: Natural Sciences

 MnTC Goal Area 3: A minimum of two courses in different disciplines, one course must have a traditional lab and the other course must have a traditional lab –or- lab-like experience.

 *MnTC Goal Area 4: Mathematics/Logical Reasoning

 A minimum of one course totaling at least 3 credits

 *MATH 1140 or MATH 1150 are recommended for Political Science students.

 **MnTC Goal Area 5: History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences

 A minimum of two courses, in two different subjects totaling 6 credits

 One of the required Political Science electives will satisfy one of the required disciplines. Choose one additional course in a different subject that meets MnTC Goal area 5.

 **MnTC Goal Area 6: Humanities and Fine Arts

 A minimum of two courses, in two different subjects totaling 6 credits

 MnTC Goal Area 7: Human Diversity

 A minimum of one course

 MnTC Goal Area 8: Global Perspective

 A minimum of one course

 One of the Political Science electives will satisfy this requirement.

 MnTC Goal Area 9: Ethical and Civic Responsibility

 A minimum of one course

PSCI 1101 will satisfy this requirement.

 MnTC Goal Area 10: People and the Environment

 A minimum of one course

PSCI 1137 is recommended.

Completion Requirements for the Political Science Transfer Pathway:

One course may meet more than one MnTC Goal Area; however, credits may only be counted once.

The total credits for each semester will vary depending on which Math and Science courses are selected to complete the Political Science Transfer pathway. Students need to complete the entire 40-credit Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) as well as elective credits to reach 60 credits for the Political Science: Transfer Pathway degree.

* MnTC Goal Area 3: Students must complete a minimum of two courses in two different subjects, one course must have a traditional lab and the other course must have a traditional lab-or-lab-like experience from MnTC Goal Area 3.

*MnTC Goal Area 4 all students pursuing this award should work closely with their advisor and intended transfer institution to ensure proper selection of MnTC Goal Area 4 coursework for transfer. MATH 1140 or MATH 1150 are strongly recommended for the Political Science: Transfer Pathway.

**To complete the Political Science: Transfer Pathway degree students must complete at least two courses from two different subjects in MnTC Goal Areas 5 and 6.  One of the Political Science electives will satisfy one subject area for MnTC Goal Area 5.

All students pursuing this award should work closely with their advisor and consult with the intended transfer institution to ensure proper selection of required program courses, if applicable program electives, required Minnesota Transfer Curriculum courses, and MnTC electives. You are expected to meet with your advisor on a regular basis to ensure courses are taken in an order that will lead to efficient and successful completion of the required coursework. Your advisor will assist you in choosing courses that will help you progress toward successful completion of your declared major.
